A Brief History on Pepper Spray

Pepper Spray didn’t become popular as a personal self-defense spray until about 1987 to 1988 in the United States. However we find that in ancient China the warriors used red chili pepper as a self-defense weapon.

The Chinese wrapped ground cayenne pepper in rice papers to throw in the faces of their enemies. The use of this ground pepper was the weapon of choice to incapacitate a person momentarily. In ancient Japan the Ninjas had been using ground pepper to disable their adversaries for hundreds of years. Researching historical data we find that the Tokagawa era in the early 1600s used a weapon called a Metsubishi. This weapon was used to blind the enemy. This Metsubishi was constructed of a small square or round box that was hollow and could be loaded with different pepper powders and even some ground glass. A short tube with a mouthpiece was attached and this allowed the operator to blow the powder mix in the face of their assailants. Almost all of these early peppers were made by grinding red chili pepper.

Returning from the 16th century, law enforcement agencies in the United States started using pepper spray for riot control after World War II. Today there isn’t a police or security officer that doesn’t carry some form of pepper spray.

Used as an extremely effective disabling spray against humans, it was soon found to also be effective against attacking animals such as domestic dogs, wild mountain lions and even bears. United States letter carriers are issued pepper spray as a defense against dog attacks, while delivering the mail.

Pepper spray is used to disable an assailant for a short time, and has no long-term effects. This allows you to escape an attack and contact authorities for help. Pepper Spray, although legal in all states of the United States, does have some restrictions and limitations on carrying, buying and shipping. You should check your local laws and ordinances before carrying or ordering pepper spray.

Today pepper spray is made of a derivative of cayenne pepper. The compound is mixed with an emulsifier that suspends it in water and the combination is placed in an aerosol container. This allows it to be carried conveniently and available for use immediately. When a person is sprayed in the face with pepper spray it causes tearing almost to the point of temporary blindness. Side effects are pain, coughing and choking, making breathing difficult.

Another self-defense spray available is Mace, which is made of a high-grade Oleoresin Capsicum or OC pepper. This will cause the eyes to slam shut, and cause choking and a painful burning sensation. The hottest pepper spray available as determined by an independent lab is Wildfire 18% which measures at 242,000 Scoville Heat Units.

Anyone who has been trained by the military or a police department has experienced the effects of pepper spray during their training. This experience is very uncomfortable and debilitating, but the effects are not long-lasting. Usually the effects dissipate after 15 to 20 minutes. Rubbing of the eyes will prolong or intensify the effect while flushing with water can help relieve the burning sensation. Using baby shampoo on the skin can relieve the burning and blinking the eyes can cause tearing to flush the eyes.

Knife Throwing

A throwing knife is different from an ordinary knife in that weighted and specifically designed to be thrown effectively. Knife throwing can be defined as a sport, self-defense combat skill or an art form.

It is thought that throwing knives originated in the Central Sudan about 1000 AD, although some believed it may date back to 1350 BC due to wall scriptures in Libya. There are lots of references, but none are well documented. Throwing knives were originally created for hunting and warfare, with a maximum effective range of 50 yards.

A throwing knife is usually made of a solid piece of steel with no handle. The knife is divided into two parts called the grip and the blade. The blade is sharpened to a very fine razor edge while the handle is left blunt for holding and throwing. The grip is shaped in a manner to give a good gripping surface for throwing and to balance the blade for accuracy. The speed and power of a throwing knife is determined by its weight. Lighter knives are easily handled and thrown, but may not have the weight to penetrate the target. A heavier knife will penetrate the target and is more stable in flight, but requires more strength to throw.

There are two basic techniques in throwing a knife. There is the no-spin method in which the knife is released and the blade rotated to the direction of flight, or the spin technique in which the blade and grip are constantly rotating until impact. The spin technique requires the knife be thrown at an object at a specific distance to insure the blade hits the target upon impact. On the other hand the no-spin can be thrown at a target at any distance.

When throwing the knife, the thrower will hold the knife in their hand by the grip, bring the hand behind the head and rotate the arm and hand in a circular motion forward releasing the knife at a point when the knife and arm are perpendicular to the ground. The knife when released will rotate the blade toward the target or keep rotating (spin) the blade until target impact. If the thrower waits until the knife is brought down and pointing directly at the target the knife will fly straight into the ground. To cause the knife to spin all the way to the target a slight ”flip of the wrist” is introduced while keeping the alignment of the knife hand and arm in a straight circular motion forward. This spinning technique in the author’s opinion requires more effort and skill and “opens the door” for more error.

There are two different kinds of throwing knives made today. These are the balanced and the unbalanced blade. The balanced blade has the center of gravity at the center of the knife. These knives follow a predictable flight path and are generally more accurate. Also if employing the spin technique of throwing, the balanced knife is easier to work with. The unbalanced knife is either heavier at the blade or the grip and is thrown by gripping the lighter end of the knife. The unbalanced knife has a less predictable flight path. There are knives available with sliding weights on the blade to make the knife either balanced or unbalanced and these are usually used for experimentation or training. The choice of balanced or unbalanced and if unbalanced whether the blade or grip is heavier is a choice of the thrower and intended use of the knife. Adding more weight for better penetration can result in building an unbalanced knife.

As a sport, knives are thrown at wooden or foam targets with a bull’s-eye and outer rings at a specific distance. Points are based on proximity to the bull’s-eye and distance from the target. Two well-known groups that participate in knife throwing are AKTA (American Knife Throwers Alliance, USA) and Euro Throwers (European Throwing Club “Flying Blades”, EU). These organization sponsor events for people in the pursuit of knife throwing as a sport. In addition to knife throwing, throwing axes or hatchet throwing has become popular in these communities.

Buying Your First CCTV System

Buying your first Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) system can be a daunting thing. There are lots of choices to be made. First you must determine why and where you need your CCTV system.

You’ve heard it a thousand times, “there are no stupid questions”. Whether buying in a store or on-line, when you encounter something you don’t understand, ask a question or send an email. Most on-line sites have a camera FAQs page that will answer your questions. Let’s review some common questions.

Is an Infrared camera a must so that I can see in poor or no light conditions? IR cameras use LEDs to see in the dark, but the cameras are expensive and the LEDs usually last 2 to 3 years. There are circumstances where these cameras are a must, but consider either lighting the area 24 hours a day or installing motion sensing flood lamps. This is a much less expensive option.

Do I need to buy an 8 camera system if I only have need for 4 cameras? Some salespeople will always try to sell you more than you need to get a larger commission. A good salesperson will sell you what you need and only what you need and that is why you plan ahead to know your needs. Cameras and a security DVR for surveillance systems are very reliable today and will last many years, so you do not need to buy extras in case one fails.

You should buy your equipment only in a “brick and mortar store”. While this may be a solution for you if you have a store nearby, you can find more options and better pricing on-line. On- line stores usually have more options and better pricing, because they don’t warehouse the products, but instead have them drop-shipped from the factory to you. This way you are not buying old merchandise or having some pushed on you that the retailer needs to remove from inventory. These systems today are easy to set up as a DIY project.

I need someone who will provide tech support. This is true. If your supplier doesn’t give you tech support, then move on to someone that will. Nobody knows everything, and questions may arise that need answers.

Do you need high-speed cameras with 30 frames per second? If you are putting this system in a bank or gambling casino, the answer is yes. A retail store will do fine with 15 – 20 fps, and in your home 5 – 7 fps is fine. Also the less frames per second, the more you can record on your hard drive or memory card.

Get only color cameras and stay away from black and white cameras. False! If lighting is not a problem, than color cameras are nice, but in low-light conditions, black and white cameras work the best as they see contrast in low light conditions. Some color cameras today switch to black and white in low-light conditions.

Do I need a terabyte of memory on my hard drive? If you are running multiple days of recording and 12 or 16 cameras with 30 fps per camera, than yes you need 1 to 3 terabytes of recording space.  Most CCTV systems in small business or for home video security consist of 4 cameras and 80 to 60 gigabytes is ample for recording. For a hidden camera with an internal DVR a memory card with 8 gigabytes is enough as you will probably check the camera daily.

Should I buy a packaged deal? The short answer is probably yes. If you buy a packaged deal not only will you get the necessary accessories, but all the equipment will be compatible with each other. Also you’ll find a better price and get more equipment for the money in a packaged deal.

Should I expect warranty on the equipment? Of course there should be a specific warranty to protect against manufacturing defects. Also the seller should guarantee that the products you buy are useable and compatible with your needs or accept a full return.

Self-Defense for Men, Women and Children

As they say, “different stokes for different folks”. Before we decide on which type of self-defense is right for a person, we need to classify age and gender.

I think we can break down the categories to four basic:

Children and young teenagers are a group from 1 to 14. This is a group under parental control. They should not be dating or driving and should be supervised, by adults, in any activity away from home.

Responsible Teenagers of the age 15 to 21. These are young adults, not quite as capable of making educated decisions as their adult counter-part. However this group is dating, driving and going to college.

Men over the age of twenty-one. This is an adult group that is capable of making decisions and realizing the ramifications of their actions.

Women over the age of twenty-one have the same traits as their male counter-parts. The difference is physical strength and cultural influence.

I believe all groups could learn a lot by classes on physical self-defense such as Karate or Judo. This not only gives those skills to protect themselves, but also builds a healthier body, stamina and positive self-worth. Even the children can benefit from this type of training and as they grow older can use these skills when they find themselves in a difficult situation. However physical contact with an intruder should be used only if there is no other means of self-defense available.

Involving children in self-defense training and education about self-defense items is appropriate. Sending the child out on their own with just this training or personal self-defense weapons is not permissible. When they grow older they can hone their skills and obtain self-defense items.

Responsible Teenagers can be educated and trained to carry personal self-defense protection. Every young adult is different and it is the duty of a parent to decide when and what the young adult is ready for. This will require the adult to educate themselves as well as the young adult on the proper items and their use for the young adult to carry. The parent should not just buy a stun gun and give it to the young adult with no training or education. Before you consider “arming” a young adult with a stun gun, Mace or other item, you need to check local laws and definitely school rules and regulations. Maybe the items will only be carried on a date or in their automobile. You must follow the laws and educate your child to follow all rules and laws.

Most women that say they are not capable of self-defense are a product of the culture or have not been educated. Judo as an example, does not rely on physical size or strength to be effective. Women can be trained as well as men to defend themselves, but close physical contact should be a last resort. There are many great products women can use to avoid physical contact with an intruder.

Not all men are “macho men”, capable of beating off and disabling their attacker. Men as with all other groups should avoid physical contact with an attacker and find a suitable self-defense item that fits their life-style and abilities.

Cell Phones are a necessity today for anyone who travels away from home, especially if they are alone. The cell phone can be used to prevent a confrontation or for many other emergency reasons. It is in itself a self-defense tool to call police, friends or family. Young children can be provide with special cell-phones that are set up with buttons to dial preset numbers.

A Mini GPS Device can be used by children, teenagers or adults. For children, if they are kidnapped, the device will monitor their location and even monitor conversations going on around them. The device has a panic button that will summons parents and the police and they can use a computer or smart phone to track the child. Teenagers can carry a mini-GPS without anyone knowing they have it on their person. Adults can use the mini GPS for hiking, camping, traveling or for senior citizens that may have diminished capabilities.

Personal Alarms send out a very loud and shrill signal the alerts everybody in range and can scare off a potential attacker. These can be in many shapes, sizes and intensity of the alarm. This is an item can be carried by all four groups safely. Some are very small and can be attached to a child’s clothing or belt loop and be used by the child to attract attention allowing them to escape from a potential pedophile.

Mace or Pepper Spray is a very convenient and effective deterrent. Pepper Spray is non-lethal and comes in many sizes and shapes to carry on your person, handbag, car or home. Used properly it will disable your assailant for 15 to 30 minutes and cause discomfort for up to one hour so you will have time to escape and summons the police.  I believe a properly trained responsible teenager through adult can safely carry and use pepper spray. However local laws may prohibit anyone under the age of 18 carrying it on their person.

A Stun Gun is another extremely effective deterrent against attackers. Again a responsible teenager through adult can effectively carry a stun gun. This is a close proximity weapon that must touch the attacker. However working in a crowed environment, being in a crowd or being on a date, this may be the difference between safety and rape or being attacked and robbed. The stun gun has a sort but highly effective range of time to allow you to run and summons the police or get to safety. Again local laws may prohibit the carrying of a stun gun by anyone under the age of 18.

In choosing your means of self-defense we cannot emphasize training and education enough. Also you must comply with local laws and school rules. Special exemptions may be applicable to young adults under the age of 18 if there has been a history of attacks in their neighborhood, school or personal life, but again you must consult the local authorities. In many jurisdictions the person under the age of 18 may not be able to carry pepper spray or a stun gun on their person, but they may carry it in their car or dorm room.

Be safe, trained and educated and by all means follow the law. Once your attacker is down, run and summons the police.

Sexual Assault Defense for Women

Women incur the violence in nine out of ten cases of violence. One out of every three women report sexual or physical abuse in their lifetime, and these are the ones reported.

Women are seen as an easy target to a male attacker. This should not be the case, as women can protect themselves from attack and rape. To accomplish this the woman must be proactive and get the tools and training she needs. We should be able, as a society, to reduce the victims to an equal ratio of men vs. women. Size and strength is a factor, but does not eliminate the ability of a woman to defend herself.

Attacks come in three primary areas of life. The first is violence at home between domestic partners, family members or intruders. The second instance is at school especially for college students that are away on campus. Finally the boldest is being attacked in public, such as streets, alleys and parking lots. This does not preclude attacks that can happen at work or in secluded places. We will focus on the three main areas, and techniques in these areas can be used in other circumstances.

Whether you are married, in a relationship or living with a relative, domestic abuse is real and it can happen to you. Twenty percentage of women in a serious relationship report being slapped or hit, and Thirty percent report that they are worried about their safety in their relationship at home. It is not just being in the wrong marriage with the wrong person. A spouse or family member living with you can have a devastating experience, as in a job loss or auto accident. Feeling safe from prying eyes and intervention, this person may take out their frustration on their spouse or relative in their own home. Intruders may enter your home and if confronted, may attack. If not confronted most intruders will try to escape and run, but if confronted and fear being identified, may attack, rape or murder the home owner.

College is a great experience for a young adult when properly prepared for the experience. Isolated from home, hormones raging, access to drugs or alcohol all contribute to some devastating statistics at college. One out of every four women will be sexually assaulted at college and one out of eight will be raped. One-half of rapes in college occur while on a date. This helps explain why nine out of ten women know their rapist. During date rapes three out of four men and one out of every two women were involved with drugs or had been drinking.

People who incur violence or assault in public are usually desperate or intoxicated with drugs and or alcohol. These are people who are oblivious to the fact they can be seen or identified. Usually these attacks occur near areas where the economy is very bad or alcohol and drugs are readily available, such as slums or low-class bars. In most of these cases the attacker and the victim do not know each other. With a little thought and preparation these areas can be avoided, especially at night. If your job or some other reason dictates you must be in these areas, there are ways to protect yourself.

First you must carry yourself in a positive manner, with you head held high and eyes forward. Talk in a direct and assertive manner and do not get into a back and forth discussion. Always carry your cell-phone and be prepared to dial 911 immediately. Making your phone visible will tell a potential attacker of your intention. Walk with a brisk pace going directly to your destination, do not let yourself get sidetracked. Always try to go to unfamiliar and potentially unsafe areas during late morning to early afternoon, when there will be more people present and plenty of light. If attacked and you have no defensive weapons, scream, yell and fight dirty by kicking your assailant in the shins or groin. The minute your assailant backs off, run for your car or the police. Use your cell-phone for help.

Entering your home you need two things ready; you’re keys and your cell phone. After entering or if prior to entering you suspect an intruder in your home, don’t enter or leave immediately. Do not try to find and identify the intruder and remember that whatever is in your home can be replaced, but your life cannot. Call 911 and get in your car, lock the doors and move away from your house. Do not unlock your car or talk with anyone until the police arrive.

When shopping for groceries many people load themselves down with packages and maybe have a child. Use shopping carts and keep your hands free to open doors and use your cell phone. Attackers look for over-burdened women as easy targets. When loading your car, put your child in first and then put yourself between the car and shopping cart. If possible travel with a friend or spouse, and this applies to all instances. Use the buddy system and share tasks so one person always has a free hand and access to a cell phone. Do not ever leave your car unlocked and if approaching your car it appears someone has broken in, get away from the car and call the police, as the intruder may still be hiding in your car or nearby.

When sending your children to college, advise them of the chance of attack and rape. Yes men can get raped also, but I will not go into any detail. Tell your child to travel on the campus with a friend and if dating always go on a double date with someone else they personally know other than their date. Advise your child to not participate in online or blind dating. Finally they should be inside a safe place during hours of darkness. If they must travel, tell them to travel with a trustworthy friend and even though walking is healthy, at night use public transportation.

So how do we prepare for an attack? First you can take a course on personal self-defense. Your local YMCA may have classes that can teach self-defense or you can go to a local self-defense school. There are many DVDs available that will teach the maneuvers necessary to defend yourself. Keep yourself fit and exercise regularly. Most assailants do not expect anyone they select to defend themselves, so any effort whether trained or not, may deter your assailant. The more fit you are the better you will be able to wrestle free of a hold and kick your assailant to stop them. Also to be able to run away you need to be in good shape.

The best self-defense is to be proactive. That is don’t expose yourself to bad situations and walk with a buddy.  However reactive defense can be very effective also. We discussed screaming, yelling, kicking and running, which are always good. Everybody no matter how big or little, male or female should carry a non-lethal self-defense weapon. This would be Mace, tear gas, pepper spray or a stun gun.  There are also a steel baton, kubotan and a heart attack defense weapon available to name a few. These can be found online with a simple search. The websites will describe the different self-defense items and you can contact the web site owner for help in choosing. Amazingly these items are not very expensive, but they are very effective.

Finally the saddest thing is when someone is abducted and we have no way of knowing where they are. Today we have very effective GPS Trackers that anyone can carry out of sight and the police or parents can use them to locate the person on the Internet.
